Languages
At Haimo, our childen experience different languages, through learning, in the form of greetings and songs from Nursery to Year 6. From Year 3, our children are taught French. They learn about different cross curricular subjects such as: getting to know you, the Romans, planets and the Vikings.
We believe that learning a language enriches the curriculum by providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. The natural links between languages and other areas of the curriculum can enhance the overall teaching and learning experience. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained make a major contribution to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture/s and those of others. Language also lies at the heart of ideas about individual and community. In addition, learning another language can do a great deal to shape children’s ideas in this critical area as well as giving them a new perspective on their own language. It can stimulate a children’s creativity, support oracy and literacy, gain additional knowledge and understanding across the curriculum and support and celebrate the international dimension.
